Installing the LaunchPad drivers

To use Energia you will need to have the LaunchPad drivers installed. The drivers allow your PC to “see” the LaunchPad on a serial COM port when it is connected.

MSP-EXP432P401R LaunchPad

Energia (MT) uses a different method for building Sketches for the MSP-EXP432P401R. Because of a limitation in this method you must install Energia in a location without spaces.

If you have already used the MSP-EXP432P401R LaunchPad with TI’s Code Composer Studio then you probably already have the driver installed. If not, then follow the steps below to install the driver.

  1. Do not connect your MSP-EXP432P401R LaunchPad to your PC. If you already plugged it into your PC then unplug it before proceeding to step 2.
  2. Download the LaunchPad drivers for Windows: MSP-EXP432P401R XDS110 Driver Package
  3. Unzip and double click DPinst.exe for Windows 32bit or DPinst64.exe for Windows 64 bit.
  4. Follow the installer instructions.
  5. Connect your MSP-EXP432P401R LaunchPad to your PC. The MSP-EXP432P401R will be automatically recognized.
  6. All done, you are now ready to program the MSP-EXP432P401R with Energia.

Troubleshooting (Not seeing your Serial Port in Energia?  Driver not correctly installed?)
** Make sure jumpers are connected on LaunchPad and you get a green power LED turning on when connected via USB
** Restart Energia
** Restart computer (shouldn’t be required but may help)
** Right click and run DPinst.exe or DPinst64.exe as administrator

CC3200 LaunchPad

Follow the instructions on this page http://energia.nu/cc3200guide/ for important jumper settings and firmware upgrade instructions.

  1. Do not connect your CC3200 LaunchPad to your PC. If you already plugged it into your PC then unplug it before proceeding to step 2.
  2. Download the CC3200 Drivers for Windows: CC3200 LaunchPad CDC drivers zip file for Windows 32 and 64 bit
  3. Unzip and double click DPinst.exe for Windows 32bit or DPinst64.exe for Windows 64 bit.
  4. Follow the installer instructions.
  5. Connect your CC3200 LaunchPad to your PC. The CC3200 will be automatically recognized.

MSP-EXP430G2 and MSP-EXP430FR5739 LaunchPad

If TI’s Code Composer Studio 5.x or 6.x with MSP430 support is already installed on your computer then the drivers are already installed. Skip to the download step. Otherwise follow steps 1-3 below.  For more details on MSP430 USB drivers and debug stack, go to http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP_Debug_Stack#Windows.

  1. Download the LaunchPad drivers for Windows: LaunchPad CDC drivers zip file for Windows 32 and 64 bit (alternate mirror: download)
  2. Unzip and double click DPinst.exe for Windows 32bit or DPinst64.exe for Windows 64 bit.
  3. Follow the installer instructions (should be one click and done)

MSP-EXP430F5529LP and MSP-EXP430FR5969 LaunchPad

Important Note about the MSP-EXP430FR5969 LaunchPad
If your board says “eZ-FET Rev 1.2 with Energy Trace” then this board is currently not support by Energia. The board version is most likely 2.0 and above. The reason for not supporting this board yet is that the driver used by the programmer does not yet support all operating systems. As soon as this driver becomes available for all operating systems an Energia update will be made available. This also means that as soon as we do update the driver, all MSP-EXP430FR5969 without Energy trace will no longer be supported. Texas Instruments should have replaced your board with the new Energy Trace board if you purchases an early version of the MSP-EXP430FR5969 LaunchPad without Energy Trace.

  1. Download the LaunchPad drivers for Windows: LaunchPad CDC drivers zip file for Windows 32 and 64 bit. Notice that these driver files are different then the ones for the MSP-EXP430G2 and MSP-EXP430FR5739 LaunchPad!
  2. Unzip and double click DPinst.exe for Windows 32bit or DPinst64.exe for Windows 64 bit.
  3. Follow the installer instructions (should be one click and done)

EK-TM4C123GXL, EK-TM4C1294XL and EK-LM4F120XL LaunchPad

Follow the ICDI Driver Installation Instructions from Texas Instruments http://www.ti.com/lit/ml/spmu287b/spmu287b.pdf

You can download the Stellaris ICDI drivers from here: http://www.ti.com/tool/stellaris_icdi_drivers 

You will need to manually install the drivers through the device manager.

For Windows 7 users it is automatic. Right click the ICDI device and update the driver.

For Windows 8 and Windows 10 users you will need to follow this guide to disable driver signature and correctly install the drivers:

LAUNCHXL-F28069M, LAUNCHXL-F28027, and LAUNCHXL-F28027F LaunchPad

Note: Support for the F28069M LaunchPad is currently available in the Energia Github and will be released as part of the next distribution.

Drivers:

If TI’s Code Composer Studio 5.x or 6.x with C2000 support is already installed on your computer then the drivers are already installed. Skip to the compiler step. Otherwise follow steps 1-3 below.

  1. Download the LaunchPad drivers for Windows: LaunchPad XDS100 drivers zip file for Windows 32 and 64 bit
  2. Unzip and double click DPinst.exe for Windows 32bit or DPinst64.exe for Windows 64 bit
  3. Follow the installer instructions (should be one click and done)
  4. The virtual COM port may not be enabled by default.  Follow these steps to ensure it’s enabled

** Unplug and re-plug LaunchPad’s USB
** Make sure jumpers are connected on LaunchPad and you get two green power LEDs turning on when connected via USB
** Restart Energia
** Restart computer (shouldn’t be required but may help)
** Right click and run DPinst.exe or DPinst64.exe as administrator

Compiler:

Because of license conflicts the C2000 compiler cannot be distributed with Energia.  The compiler can be downloaded for free from TI.  After downloading and installing Energia follow these steps:

  1. Download the compiler from here
  2. Start the installation process by executing the installer. A window with C2000 Code Generation Tools should appear
  3. Continue through the process until the installation directory can be chosen
  4. Change the Installation directory to the \energia-VERSION\hardware\tools\c2000 by navigating to the tools directory under the hardware folder. Then add \c2000 to the path
  5. Continue to finish the setup

Energia checks for the C2000 compiler at startup.  If the compiler isn’t present, C2000 support will not be displayed in the IDE.  If after installing the compiler Energia doesn’t show C2000 support in the boards menu, first try restarting Energia.  If this doesn’t solve the problem ensure that you installed the compiler to the correct directory.

Mac OS X Users & Linux Users

Download Energia

The most recent release of Energia can be downloaded from the download page.

Double click and extract the energia-0101EXXXX-windows.zip file to a desired location.

Starting Energia

Double click Energia.exe (Windows users). Energia will start and an empty Sketch window will appear. 

Selecting the Serial Port

Select Serial Port from the Tools menu to view the available serial ports. On windows, they will be listed as COMXXX port and usually a higher number is the LaunchPad com port.

Selecting the Board

To select the board or rather the msp430 in your LaunchPad, select Board from the Tools menu and choose the board that matched the msp430 in the LaunchPad.

Uploading Your First Blinky Sketch

To load the Blinky example into the editor, select Blink from the Blink from the File->Examples->1.Basics menu.

To compile and upload the Sketch to the LaunchPad click the Upload button.

If all is well then the green LED on your LaunchPad is happily blinking. Congratulations, you have uploaded your first Sketch. Energia includes many more examples to get you started with your electronic project. Need help? The Energia discussion forum is hosted on 43oh.com.
